3. Can I Really Do My Taxes On My Own?
Only you know your full tax situation. So, the more informed of how taxes work the more you will save.
A good accountant is very expensive and the cheaper quicker shops simply take what information you give them and spit out a return – There are Credits and deductions missed out on.
A basic return – W-2, Some Interest/Dividends/Capital Gains, a Mortgage, and some various deductions, like Charity, State and Local taxes, Child Tax credits as well as some other Credits is straight forward to do, if one takes the necessary time to initially learn. Once they are done the first time – year over year it gets much easier.
4. How Does The Credit/Deduction Work For Child Care?
Expenses for child care when working can earn you a credit
Expenses for 1 child up to $3,000 or 2 children up 2 $6,000
The amount does not have to be even – it can be $4,000 for one child and $2,000 for another.
The credit is 20% of the expense – so the largest amount of a credit is $600 or $1,200
For Example – If one worked and sent 2 children to nursery for a total of $4,800 for the year, the credit would be $960 which goes against your taxes (not a deduction, rather a dollar-for-dollar credit) for the current year
5. What Tax Benefits/Savings Are There on Using 529 Plans For College Savings?
All income that contributions generate will grow tax deferred (no tax on current interest, dividends, and capital gains) and when distributed to be used for school the growth will be tax free
Some states allow for the contribution amount to be deductible on the taxpayers Return. For Example NYS allows up to $10,000for a married couple to be deducted. If you lived in NYC and had a combined NYS/NYC rate of 10% then you would save $1,000
Although, the limit is quite large up to $380,000 – typically the most a taxpayer would put in is $14,000 per year – if married up to $28,000 so as not to generate gift tax issues.
